According to the World Health Organization, elderly people aged 60 years or older were 600 million in 2000 and it is expected to reach 2 billion by 2050. The aging process is associated with the decline and deterioration of functional properties at the cellular, tissue, and organ level that yields a loss of homeostasis and decreased adaptability to internal and external stress. All these changes increase the vulnerability to disease and mortality.
